Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 20 year old farm hand on his parent's place at Cuthbert in Randolph County, GA. He enlisted as a Private in Company H, 13th Georgia Infantry on 8 July 1861 in Griffin, GA.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to the CSA General Hospital in Charlottesville, VA on 23 September 1863 and was "furloughed irregularly by Gen'l Lawton" on 27 September. He was killed at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863.

His father Elijah filed a claim for his final pay in November 1863, noting Newton left "no wife or child."

His brothers Richard R. Cutts (b 1833) and William Jasper Cutts (b 1838) were also members of Company H; Richard died, probably of disease, on 25 September 1861 at White Sulphur Springs, VA (now WV) and William was killed near Fredericksburg, VA on 29 April 1863.
