He enlisted as a Private in Company D, 13th Georgia Infantry on 13 May 1862 in Thomaston, GA.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the left thigh, his leg broken, in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was retired to the Invalid Corps on 23 January 1863 and assigned to duty in the Bureau of Conscription. He was retired from all active service in February 1865.

His service from his Compiled Service Records,1 online from fold3, also as T.J. Hartsfield, and from Henderson,2 who has him as Thomas J. Hartsfield. He signed his own name J.T. Hartsfield.

He is possibly John Thomas Hartsfield (1842-1900); born Upson County; age 17 in 1860 living on his parents Jackson and Juliann Hartsfield's farm at Eagle Cleft in Walker County, GA; by 1880 a blacksmith in Independence County, AR.
