Age 19, he enlisted in Company A, 11th Ohio Infantry as a Private on 20 June 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Corporal on 1 December but reduced to Private again on 26 December 1862. He mustered out with. his Company on 22 June 1864.
