Before Antietam

He was a 24 year old architect in New Haven, CT when he enlisted as a Private in Company F, 12th United States Infantry on 13 November 1861 at Fort Hamilton, NY, and was promoted to Corporal then Sergeant by 1 July 1862. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant to date from 25 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 6 February 1863. He was killed at Peebles Farm (aka Chapel House) near Petersburg, VA on 1 October 1864 and was honored by brevet to Captain, USA for his actions there.

A fort on the Union line at Petersburg (1864-65) was named for him.
