Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 17 year old farm worker living with his parents and 5 siblings o their farm in Henry County, GA. He enlisted as a Private in Company C, 13th Georgia Infantry on 13 September 1861 in Richmond, VA.

On the Campaign

He was captured at Frederick, MD on 12 or 13 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD by 19 September and sent to Aiken's Landing, VA on 2 (or 6) October for exchange. He was declared formally exchanged on 10 November 1862 and was on sick furlough to 4 February 1863, then returned to duty. He was appointed Corporal by January 1864 and 5th Sergeant by August 1864. He was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
