He enlisted as a Private in Company G, 13th Georgia Infantry on 5 May 1862 at Savanah, GA.

On the Campaign

He was captured in Maryland (on South Mountain?) on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in a US Army hospital in Philadelphia with pleuritis to 29 October, briefly at the Provost Barracks there, then a prisoner at Fort Delaware to 15 December 1862, when he was sent to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange. He was wounded at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863. He was captured again, at Winchester, VA on 19 September 1864 and held at Point Lookout, MD until 15 March 1865. He was received at Boulware & Cox's Wharves, James River, VA for exchange on 18 March 1865.

He married Almira Avirett (1) in February 1866 and they had a daughter Viola.
