Before Antietam
A lawyer in Boston, he enrolled 4 September 1861 and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in Company L, First Massachusetts Cavalry, on 19 December 1861. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 19 July 1862.
On the Campaign
He was with his Company on South Mountain and at Antietam in September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was appointed Adjutant in February 1863 and promoted to Captain of Company E on 2 January 1864. He mustered out on 26 June 1865.
He was appointed Major and Judge Advocate, US Volunteers to date from 21 June 1865. He was honored by brevets to Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel, US Volunteers on 2 December 1865.
After the War
He was commissioned Major and Judge Advocate, US (Regular) Army on 23 February 1867, and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and Deputy Judge Advocate General on 10 September 1888. He was serving in the Dakota Department at his death of disease in 1892.
