Before Antietam

Giving his age as 28, a clerk, he enlisted as a Private in General Service, US Army on 2 October 1849 in New York City. He reenlisted in October 1854 at Fort Columbus, NY, by then a Sergeant, and was discharged on 2 October 1859. He enlisted again on 25 August 1860 as Sergeant Major, First Battalion, 12th United States Infantry. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the 12th US on 30 June 1862 and was promoted to First Lieutenant on 11 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded Company B at Antietam in September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was at Frederickburg, VA in December bur resigned his commission on 17 February 1863. He again enlisted as a Sergeant in general Army service in Washington, DC on 4 June 1863 and was discharged on 23 December 1865.

After the War

He was appointed a clerk in the Adjutant General's Office, US Army, in Washington, DC. In 1870 he was still a War Department clerk in Washington, but by 1880 he was a clerk in the US Treasury Department.
