Federal (USA)

Lieutenant

Ebenezer Clough Allen

(c. 1830 - 1863)

Home State: Massachusetts

Branch of Service: Infantry

Unit: 12th United States Infantry, First Battalion

Before Antietam

After two years' apprenticeship in the drug business in Boston, with a recommendation from Congressman Daniel P King, on 25 January 1848 he applied to the Secretary of War to be a cadet at the US Military Academy. Unsuccessful, he wrote to President Polk in November 1848 and again - in three busy pages - in February 1849, asking for a direct appointment. It did not come.

On 6 May 1850, then a 20 year old apothecary in Boston, he enlisted in New York in Company A, 3rd United States Infantry and was assigned as Hospital Steward. He was discharged on 6 May 1855, by then the Quartermaster Sergeant, at Fort Fillmore, New Mexico Territory. He reenlisted, in Company E, 6th United States Infantry in St. Louis on 12 August 1856 and again, as a Private, in Company A, First Battalion, 12th US Infantry on 16 October 1861 at Fort Hamilton, Newport, RI, and was First Sergeant by June 1862. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant to date from 25 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded Company A at Antietam in September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was at Fredericksburg in December, was promoted to First Lieutenant on 19 January 1863, and was at Chancellorsville in May 1863. He died of small pox at the Marine Hospital, Baltimore, MD on 18 December 1863.
