Before Antietam
A 23 year old clerk, he enlisted at Fort Hamilton, NY on 11 November 1861 as a Private in Company D, First Battalion, 12th United States Infantry. He was Sergeant when he was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, 12th US Infantry on 26 June (to date from 25 May).
On the Campaign
He commanded Company E at Antietam in September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was at Fredericksburg in December, promoted to First Lieutenant in February 1863, and at Gettysburg, PA in July. He was captured at Mine Run, VA in November 1863 and held at Libby Prison, Richmond, VA until exchanged in May 1864. He was on General Romeyn Ayres' (2nd Division, 5th Army Corps) staff as Ordnance Officer to Appomattox, then a mustering officer into July 1865.
He was honored by brevets to Captain and Major, USA for his war service.
After the War
He continued in the Regular Army and was promoted to Captain, 12th Infantry on April 1866. He resigned his commission on 1 February 1873.
In 1880 he was a store clerk in San Francisco, CA.
