Before Antietam
A 21 year old papermaker, he enlisted in Baltimore, MD on 1 December 1854, in Battery E, First United States Artillery, and was at Fortress Monroe, VA and in the Seminole War (1856-57). He reenlisted in October 1859 at Fort Moultrie, SC, by then First Sergeant. He was at Fort Sumter in April 1861.
On the Campaign
He was with his battery at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
On 19 February 1863 he was appointed brevet 2nd Lieutenant and commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, 3rd United States Artillery on 17 April 1863 and was at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He was acting Assistant Adjutant General of the 2nd Brigade, Horse Artillery until wounded at Kearneysville, VA (1864). He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 14 January 1865 and rejoined his battery at Raleigh, NC in September 1865. He was honored by brevets to First Lieutenant and Captain, USA for his war service.
After the War
He continued in the Army, promoted to Captain on 20 September 1880 and Major on 7 June 1897. He retired on 10 February 1898 after more than 40 years of service.
