Before Antietam

A 23 year old laborer, he enlisted in Newport, KY as a Private in Battery L, 2nd United States Artillery on 27 January 1854 and reenlisted in January 1859, at Fort Ripley, MN, by then a Sergeant.

On the Campaign

He was with his battery at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He continued with the battery through Gettysburg in July 1863 and was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 10 August 1863. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 13 June 1864. He was honored by brevet to Captain on 13 March 1865 for his war service.

After the War

He continued in the Army until retiring on 31 December 1870. By 1880 he was living in Walla Walla, WA.
