Before Antietam

Age 20, he enrolled in Pittsburgh, and mustered for 3 months' service as a Private in Company I, 12th Pennsylvania Infantry on 25 April 1861 in Harrisburg. He mustered out with them on 5 August 1861. He enlisted again and mustered as First Sergeant, Company I, 9th Pennsylvania Reserves on 15 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He transferred to Company K, 190th Pennsylvania Infantry on 4 May 1864 and was captured on the Weldon Railroad near Petersburg, VA on 19 August 1864. He was exchanged on 22 February 1865 and was discharged on 28 June 1865.

After the War

He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion, 15th United States Infantry on 23 February 1866 and promoted to First Lieutenant on 7 March 1867 and Captain on 25 August 1868. He was assigned to the 7th US Infantry in January 1871 but resigned his commission on 15 May 1871.
