Before Sharpsburg

From Oktibbeha County, he enlisted at Columbus, MS as a Private in Company C, 2nd Mississippi Infantry Battalion on 19 July 1861. He was appointed 4th Sergeant in October and promoted to First Sergeant on 1 December 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in a Richmond hospital to 30 March 1863, then furloughed home for 60 days. He was furloughed again, considered disabled, in September 1863. He was captured on 9 March 1864 at Decatur, AL and was a prisoner at Louisville, KY to 2 April, then at Camp Chase, OH. He was sent to City Point, VA for exchange on 2 March 1865 and admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA with "defective teeth" on 13 March and returned to duty on 29 March 1865 - probably assigned to the Invalid Corps.
