Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 30 year old farmer living with his parents-in-law and family at Mayhew in Lowndes County, MS. He enlisted at West Point, MS as a Private in Company L, 2nd Mississippi Infantry Battalion on 12 May 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded by a gunshot to his right knee and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was paroled at Sharpsburg on 27 September and admitted to a US Army General Hospital #5 in Frederick, MD on 15 October. He was sent to Fort McHenry to 18 October, then on to Fortress Monroe, VA for exchange, and was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 23 October. He was furloughed home for on 12 November 1862 and returned to duty almost a year later on 20 September 1863.
He was listed as missing and presumed killed on 2 October 1864, place not given.
