Before Antietam

He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, 3rd United States Infantry on 23 March 1861 and promoted to First Lieutenant on 14 May 1861. He was first in action at Yorktown in April and May 1862, on the rest of the Peninsula Campaign, and at 2nd Bull Run in August.

On the Campaign

He commanded Company H of the Third US Infantry at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was at Fredericksburg in December, promoted to Captain on 9 February 1863, and honored by brevet to Major for his actions at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863.

After the War

He continued in the Regular Army and was transferred to the 24th US Infantry on 1 January 1871. He resigned on 5 January 1877.
