Before Antietam

He graduated from West Point and was brevetted 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd United States Infantry on 1 July 1854 and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, 6th US Infantry on 26 March 1855. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 5 June 1860 and to Captain on 17 May 1861, having had duty in the Dakotas, Utah, Nevada, and California. He came east, to Washington, DC in December 1861 and was on the Peninsular and Manassas Campaigns of 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded Company H of the 6th US Infantry on the Maryland Campaign.

The rest of the War

He was honored by brevet to Major on 2 July 1863 for his actions at Gettysburg, PA. He was afterward on garrison and recruiting duty in New York to 1866.

After the War

He continued in the Army, posted at Greenville, Newberry, and Charleston, SC, where he died in February 1868.
