Before Antietam
He came to New York as an infant then attended school in Nova Scotia to age 12. At age 19 he enlisted in New York City in the 9th New York State Militia and mustered for Federal service as a Private in Company B on 27 March 1862. His unit was re-designated the 83rd New York Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was in action with his Company at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was wounded at Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December 1862 and discharged for disability on 6 March 1863. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant, 23rd Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps on 30 October 1863, promoted to First Lieutenant and Adjutant on 10 May 1865, and mustered out on 27 November 1865.
After the War
He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, 42nd United States Infantry on 28 July 1866, but was cashiered on 30 July 1868. He was again appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 6 January 1869, transferred to the 3rd US Infantry on 22 July 1869, and resigned on 15 July 1872.
He was afterward a government Indian Agent and served in the Kiowa, Commanche, Wichita, Cheyenne, and Arapohoe agencies. He retired in 1886 and was then had a book and stationery store in Hutchinson, KS.
