Before Sharpsburg
Son of a wealthy merchant, in 1860 he was a 19 year old clerk living with his parents and siblings at Holmesville in Pike County, MS. He enrolled on 20 April 1861 at Summit, MS and mustered as 2nd Lieutenant of Company A, 16th Mississippi Infantry on 26 May 1861 in Corinth, MS. He was promoted to First Lieutenant by April 1862 and Captain on 27 June.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died of wounds on 22 September 1862, place not given. His father Norris Austin filed a claim for his final pay in February 1863.
