Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 19 year old clerk living on his parents' farm at Holmesville in Pike County, MS. He enlisted as a Private at Holmesville on 23 April 1861 and mustered as First Corporal of Company E, 16th Mississippi Infantry on 27 May 1861 in Corinth. He was 4th Sergeant by June and 3rd Sergeant by October. He was reduced to Private on 26 April 1862 at the Army reorganization. He was captured on 27 June at Strasburg, VA, was briefly in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC, and was exchanged at Fortress Monroe, VA to return to duty on 5 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in action at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was sick in Richmond, VA hospitals from 19 November to 28 December 1862. He was wounded again, by a gunshot to his left leg on 12 May 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, VA and in a hospital in Danville, VA to 8 November 1864. He deserted his unit at Petersburg, VA on 27 January 1865, surrendered himself to the enemy, and was "sent North." He took an oath of allegiance at Knoxville, TN on 16 March 1865 and was sent to Chattanooga then Louisville, KY. He was paroled and released to "remain north of the Ohio River during the war" on 28 March 1865.

After the War

By 1870 he was a planter at Alexandria in Rapides Parish, LA. In 1900 he was a farmer in Baton Rouge, LA. He was admitted to the Confederate Soldiers' Home at Beauvoir in Gulfport, MS in June 1921 and died there the next year at age 81.
