Age 23, he enlisted on 11 May 1861 in Raleigh, MS, and mustered as a Private in Company H, 16th Mississippi Infantry on 11 July 1861 in Corinth.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in the leg in action at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again, by a gunshot to his hand in May 1864, place not given, and treated in hospitals in Danville and Richmond, VA. He was wounded for the third time by a gunshot to his left knee and captured at Petersburg, VA on 2 April 1865 and released from a US Army hospital at Fortress Monroe, VA on 17 July 1865 after taking an oath of allegiance.
