Before Sharpsburg

Age 26, he enlisted on 25 May 1861 at Natchez and mustered as a Private in Company I of the 16th Mississippi Infantry on 17 June 1861 in Corinth. He was captured while sick in a hospital in Winchester, VA on 28 May 1862, paroled on 2 June, and was exchanged on 5 August 1862 at Aiken's Landing, VA. He was then in a hospital in Richmond until returned to his Company on 27 August.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the chest in action at Sharpsburg, MD on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was listed as missing after the battle at Spotsylvania Court House, VA, but had been captured there on 12 May 1864. He was held at Fort Delaware until released on 14 May 1865.
