In 1860 he was a 21 year old farmer living with his parents and 6 or more siblings on the family farm in Copiah County, MS. He enlisted at Hazlehurst, Copiah County on 9 March 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D, 12th Mississippi Infantry at Corinth, MS on 12 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in a Richmond, VA hospital to 24 December 1862, then back to duty. He was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
