Age 19, he enlisted on 20 April 1861 at Durant, MS and mustered as a Private in Company I, 12th Mississippi Infantry on 9 May 1861 in Corinth, MS.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the thigh in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in Richmond, VA by 16 October 1862 when he got paid there, but was afterward away from his Company, wounded and sick, on furlough or in Virginia hospitals to 19 May 1863, when he returned to duty. He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and held at Fort Delaware to 11 June 1865, when he made an oath of allegiance and was released.
