Age 24, he enlisted and mustered as a Private in Company C, 19th Mississippi Infantry on 14 May 1861 at Vicksburg, MS. He transferred to Company A at Gordonsville, VA on 11 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the hand in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was on furlough to about December 1862 then with his Company for the rest of the war. He was surrendered and paroled at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
