Before Antietam

An 18 year old butcher in Boston, he enlisted and mustered as a Private in Company A, 29th Massachusetts Infantry on 11 March 1862 in Roxbury.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the chest in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was detached to work at the Conscript Depot in Boston Harbor in September 1863. In October he was arrested as a deserter, in error (vice a Joseph E. Farrell), and was imprisoned without charge or trial to March 1864 before his Captain could obtain his release. He reenlisted that month and was reported missing in action at Bethesda Church, VA on 1-2 June 1864. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 August and to Sergeant on 1 December 1864. He was appointed First Sergeant on 14 June 1865 and mustered out on 29 July 1865 at Delaney House, Washington, DC.
