Before Antietam

A 19 year old machinist in Taunton, MA, he enlisted as a Private in Company G, 4th Massachusetts Infantry for 3 months' service on 30 April 1861 and mustered out on 22 July. He was commissioned and mustered as 2nd Lieutenant of Company F, 29th Massachusetts Infantry on 13 December 1861. He was promoted to First Lieutenant (Company H? D?) on 30 May 1862.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in the chest in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He resigned and was honorably discharged on 28 December 1862, probably for disability due to inguinal hernia confirmed by the brigade surgeon earlier that month.
