In 1860 he was a 16 year old farm hand on his parent's place at Grassy Knob (now Mount Oglethorpe) in Pickens County, GA. He enlisted as a Private in Company D, 23rd Georgia Infantry on 5 November 1861 at Camp McDonald in Kennesaw, GA.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His father William applied for his final pay in July 1863.
