He enlisted as a Private in Company D, 23rd Georgia Infantry on 31 August 1861 at Camp McDonald in Kennesaw, GA.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds on 25 September 1862, place not given. His brother William T Long, First Sergeant of Company D, as attorney, filed for his final pay of $106.16 in March 1863. The claim was probably paid in March 1864.
