Before Antietam
Age 24, he enlisted on 28 June 1861 in New York City and mustered in as a Private in Company D, 42nd New York Infantry on 6 July.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He reenlisted on 25 March 1864 and was captured, place and date not given. While still a prisoner, he was transferred to Company D, 82nd New York Infantry on 28 June 1864. He was transferred again, to Company B, 59th New York on 10 July. He mustered out with his Company at Munson's Hill, VA on 30 June 1865.
