Age 28, he enlisted on 10 December 1861 in New York City, and mustered in as a Private in Company K, 42nd New York Infantry on 14 December.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated in a field hospital on the Susan Hoffman farm at Sharpsburg, then admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 22 Setpember. He was sent on to Philadelphia on 26 September 1862. He mustered out with his Company on 13 July 1864 in New York City.
