Age 34, he enlisted on 26 May 1861 in New York City, and mustered in as a Private in Company A, 42nd New York Infantry on 1 July.

On the Campaign

He was wounded, with fracture, in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a US Army hospital in Frederick, MD on 24 September and sent on to Philadelphia on 30 September 1862. He was transferred to the 58th Company, Veteran Reserve Corps in 1864.
