Age 37, he enlisted in New York City on 17 September 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company C , 51st New York Infantry on 19 September. He transferred to Company K on 1 January 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
