Age 23, he enlisted in New York City and mustered as a Private in Company B, 51st New York Infantry on 18 October 1861. He was promoted to Corporal in June 1862.

He was wounded, probably in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

He was discharged for disability at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, MD on 17 November 1862.
