A 20 year old farmer, he enlisted on 13 September 1861 in New York City and mustered as a Private in Company E, 51st New York Infantry on 17 September.

On the Campaign

He was wounded, probably in action at Fox's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Corporal on 19 June 1863, reenlisted on 1 December, and was promoted to Sergeant, date not given. He was killed at Spotsylvania, VA on 18 May 1864.
