Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was 46 years old and lived with his family in Martinsburg, Berkley County, VA. He enlisted in Fredericksburg on 22 April 1861 as a Private in Company A, 30th Virginia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot to his ankle in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 1 October. He was wounded again, by a gunshot to his right thigh, and was admitted to the CSA General Hospital in Farmville, VA on 2 April 1865. He was surrendered and paroled there between 11 and 21 April.

After the War

By 1880 he was retired and living at Orange Courthouse, VA with his wife and daughter Frances G. Brown (1857-).
