Before Antietam

At about age 18, in 1829, he went to Syracuse when it was still a small town. He also served in the state Militia from that year. He later had a general store, was in the lumber business, and probably Superintendent of the penitentiary there. On 13 May 1861, then age 48, he enrolled at Elmira as First Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 12th New York Infantry. He was discharged 22 August 1862 to accept the commission as Colonel, 122nd New York Infantry to date from 28 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was discharged for disability on 23 January 1865.
