Before Antietam

In 1860 he was a 19 year old living with his parents and 2 younger siblings on their farm at Bethel, CT. On 24 September 1861, giving his occupation as joiner, he enlisted with Captain Weed in New York City as a Private in Battery I, 5th United States Artillery. He was promoted to Corporal, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Boteler's Ford near Shepherdstown, VA on 19 September 1862.

His service from the Registers.1 Personal details from family genealogists, at least one of whom has his middle initial as B, and the US Census of 1860.

His neighbor and sister Mary's future husband L. Beach Clark was wounded at Antietam on 17 September, a Corporal in the 8th Connecticut Infantry.
