Before Antietam

Age 30, he enlisted in Rochester on 23 April 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company C, 13th New York Infantry on 14 May. He was promoted to Corporal on 20 October and Sergeant Major of the regiment on 15 January 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 20 September 1862 at Boteler's Ford on the Potomac River near Shepherdstown, VA.

The rest of the War

He mustered out with his regiment on 14 May 1863 in Rochester.
