He enlisted and mustered as 3rd Sergeant of Company A, Artillery Battalion, Hampton Legion on 22 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was with the battery in Maryland and commanded the section of Blakely rifles in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862. His battalion commander Major Frobel commended him in his after-action Report:

... and Sergeant Schlemmermeyer deserve particular notice for [his] gallant conduct during the battle.

The rest of the War

He appears on a clothing receipt for the 4th Quarter of 1863 with no later military record.
