In 1850 he was a 19 year old farmer on his parent's place at Athens in Clarke County, GA. He enlisted as a Private in the Troup Artillery on 12 May 1861 in Athens, GA.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

He married Elizabeth Frances “Eliza” Bradley (1835-1919) in December 1854 and they had 4 children.
