Not yet 18 years old, he enlisted in Athens, GA on 10 May 1862 as a Private in Company K, 3rd Georgia Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was in action with his company at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was slightly wounded at Chancellorsville, VA on 4 May 1863 and was with his company to at least February 1865, the last record in his military file.

After the War

By 1872 and to at least 1900 he was a merchant in Athens, at least initially operating a candy store. He was a candidate for Tax Collector in 1877, result not known.

He married Martha Frances "Mattie" Mason (1849-1887) in March 1867 and they had 9 children.

He may have had the middle name William or Williams.
