Before Antietam

From Norwich, he enlisted on 10 September 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company D, 8th Connecticut Infantry on 21 September.

On the Campaign

Major Ward reported his bravery at Antietam on 17 September 1862:

I will notice particularly the conduct of Private Charles Walker, of Company D, who brought the national colors off the field after the sergeant and every corporal of the color-guard were either killed or wounded.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Sergeant, Company C on 17 October 1862. He reenlisted on 24 December 1863 and was reduced again to Private on 22 February 1864. He mustered out on 12 December 1865.
