Before Antietam
In 1860 he was a 19 year old farm worker living with his parents and 3 younger siblings at Beaver Creek in the Cavetown District, Washington County, MD. He enlisted on 8 September 1861 at Mt. Aetna near Hagerstown, MD as a Private in Company E, First Regiment, Maryland Home Brigade Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was captured with the rest of the garrison at Harpers Ferry on 13 September 1862.
The rest of the War
As of 8 November 1862 he was listed as absent without leave and not paroled, but was back on duty with his Company by February 1863. He reenlisted on 23 February 1864 at Harpers Ferry and received a bounty of $400 in 4 installments. He transferred as a Private to Company E of the 13th Maryland Infantry on 1 March 1865. They had brief service at Martinsburg, WV and along the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad to Harpers Ferry, and he mustered out with them on 29 May 1865 in Baltimore.
After the War
In 1870 he was again farming back at Beaver Creek and he was a laborer there by 1880 and to at least 1900. In 1910, then 69 years old, he was doing odd jobs and lived in Hagerstown.
