Before Antietam
Age 18, a printer, he enlisted and mustered in Pottsville, PA on 22 August 1861 as a Private in Company A, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was with his Company in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was discharged for disability on 4 December 1862. He enlisted again, on 18 June 1863 as a Private in Company E of the 27th Regiment, Pennsylvania Emergency Militia of 1863, was appointed Corporal on 22 June, and mustered out on 31 July. He enlisted yet again, on 18 July 1864, as a Private in Company E of the 194th Pennsylvania Infantry, a 100-day unit. He mustered out with his Company on 6 November 1864. He enlisted for the fourth and final time as a Private in Company G of the 104th Pennsylvania Infantry on 27 February 1865. He was promoted to Sergeant on 16 March and mustered out with them on 25 August 1865.
After the War
He was the editor and publisher of the Shenandoah Herald (Shenandoah, Schuykill County) from it's founding in September 1870 to about 1895.
