Age 33, he enlisted at Windsor, Berks County, PA and mustered on 22 October 1861 and mustered the same date as a Private in Company G, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry in Pottsville.

He joined his Company in Maryland on the evening of 9 September 1862 near Darnestown, MD.
The rest of the War
He was discharged for disability on 28 November 1862.
