Age 19, he enlisted on 29 August 1861 in New York City for three years and mustered as a Private in Company A, 61st NY Infantry on 2 September.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was discharged 18 October 1862 and enlisted as a Private in Battery A, 4th United States Artillery. He reenlisted on 11 September 1863, then in Battery H, and was listed as a deserter on 1 January 1865.
