He enlisted in Tamaqua, PA on 15 October 1861 and mustered into service on 21 October as a Private in Company H, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry.

On the Campaign

He suffered a gunshot to his hand, probably in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to the US Army General Hospital (GH) at Camp B in Frederick, MD on 24 October and was returned to his unit on 25 November 1862. He was absent when his unit mustered out in 1864.
