Before Antietam

In 1860 he was a 20 year old engineer in St Clair, Schuylkill County, PA. He enlisted and mustered on 2 October 1861 in Pottsville, PA as a Private in Company E, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry.

On the Campaign

He suffered a gunshot wound through a lung, probably in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to the US Army General Hospital (GH) at Camp B in Frederick, MD on 16 November and was returned to his unit on 19 February 1863. He transferred to the 64th Company, 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps on 21 September 1863.

After the War

He began receiving a disability pension in January 1868. By 1880, still unmarried, he was a 40 year old laborer living with his mother and step-father in Schuylkill Township. In 1900 he was a day laborer in Walker, PA
