Before Antietam

In 1860 he was a 24 year old farmer on his parent's place at Fairhaven, MA. He enlisted and mustered as a Private in Company F, 18th Massachusetts Infantry on 7 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded by a gunshot in the leg, the bone broken, in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

His leg was amputated at the thigh, but he died of wounds on 24 September 1862, probably at a field hospital on or near the battlefield.
